USF – Morton Plant Mease Family Medicine Residency Program Receives 5 year Accreditation
CLEARWATER, Fla., (March 23, 2009)- The University of South Florida – Morton Plant Mease Family Medicine Residency Program has received a full five year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
ACGME is a private, non-profit organization that accredits 8,300 post-MD training programs in the United States. Accreditation is accomplished through following strict guidelines, a site visit and peer review. One-third of the residency programs are required to reapply annually. The ACGME granted the maximum five year accreditation for the USF – Morton Plant Mease Family Medicine Residency program, as a result of its November 2008 site visit and January 2009 peer review. A five year accreditation was granted in 2004 as well. “This accreditation gives our resident physicians and the community more assurance of the quality of our graduate education program and illustrates its continuing ability to meet and perform at the top of national standards,” says Dr. Sean Bryan, the program director.
Graduates from medical school receive specialty training through a residency program, ranging in duration from three to seven years depending on specialty. Residency education and training prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine. During residency, resident physicians care for patients under the supervision of faculty physicians and participate in education and research activities.
