Morton Plant Mease, Clearwater Threshers Host Fifth Annual Pitch for Pink to Strike Out Breast Cancer
CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 8, 2010) – On Friday, August 6th, the Clearwater Threshers will step up to the plate for the annual Pitch for Pink game with proceeds benefiting Morton Plant Mease breast health services and programs.
The Threshers, Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, will take on the Fort Myers Miracle at 7:00 p.m. at Bright House Field wearing pink jerseys. The jerseys will be autographed after the game and auctioned off, as well as autographed pink bats. Pink baseballs will also be available for sale.
The first 1,000 women through the gates will receive a commemorative pink Threshers jute bag. Many local businesses have donated items for silent auction and balloon raffles. Some of the items include hotel/resort packages, furniture, bikes, Oakley sunglasses, spa packages, tickets to local attractions and gift certificates to local restaurants and shops.
“Because so many women in our community are touched by breast cancer, Pitch for Pink is a great event that not only creates awareness, but gives back to the community by funding support groups and financial assistance programs,” said Dr. Peter Blumencranz, MD, medical director of the Morton Plant Mease breast health program.
A special feature of the evening takes place when breast cancer survivors are invited to take a lap around the bases before the game. They are cheered along the bases by players on both teams and fans.
Proceeds from Pitch for Pink will go to the Morton Plant Mease Foundation to benefit the hospital system’s many breast cancer programs.
This is the fifth year the Threshers have held the Pitch for Pink event, and each year more money is raised for breast cancer programs at Morton Plant Mease. In 2009, approximately 4,000 fans participated in Pitch for Pink, and $25,000 was raised during the event. Since it’s inception in 2006, Pitch for Pink has raised over $110,000.
