Morton Plant Mease Announces Prostate Cancer Awareness Race
Registration Now Open
CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 20, 2010) – Online registration is now open for the inaugural Morton Plant Mease Foundation’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Race scheduled for September 11, 2010, in Clearwater, Fla. The 5K race is presented by Urology Specialists of West Florida and will benefit prostate cancer programs at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.
The 5K will kick off at 7:30 a.m. at the Cheek-Powell Wellness Center. The course will take runners through the Morton Plant Hospital campus and surrounding waterfront neighborhoods. There will also be a Kids Dash starting at 9:00 a.m.
“Through the advanced treatments available today, prostate cancer patients can experience a good recovery and a full and active life,” said Scott Klavans, MD, chair of the Morton Plant Mease Prostate Cancer Awareness Race planning committee.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men. One out of every six males will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime.
The hospitals of Morton Plant Mease offer prostate cancer patients the most advanced treatment options available to combat the disease, including robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomies and ultrasound-guided seed implantation. Additional treatment options include traditional surgery to remove the prostate gland, external beam radiation therapy and hormone therapy. A variety of support groups and services are also available to all cancer patients and their families to help them cope with the impact of cancer on their daily lives.
Participants can sign up for the event by visiting www.active.com and search for Morton Plant Mease. The registration fee is $25 until August 31, $30 through September 10 and $35 on the day of the race, September 11. The registration fee for the Kids Dash is $10 through September 11. Entry fees are non-refundable. Online registration closes on September 10. Registration capacity is limited to 1,000 entries.
