Morton Plant Mease Marks Prostate Cancer

CLEARWATER, Fla., (Aug. 30, 2010) - In observation of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease will present a series of special lectures, free health care screenings and a 5K family friendly run/walk event.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, outside of skin cancer, and second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in males.

To help promote prevention and detection of prostate cancer, there will be free screenings next month in two locations. The screenings include educational information, digital rectal exams (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests. Dates and locations are as follows:

  • Friday, September 10, 1-4 p.m., Ptak Orthopaedic and Neuroscience Pavilion Conference Center, Suite 206, Clearwater
  • Friday, September 10, 1-4 p.m., Mease Countryside Medical Arts Building, Suite 300, Safety Harbor

Throughout September, special presentations and interactive sessions will be held at various locations offering information about the latest treatment techniques and options and updates about prostate cancer symptoms and diagnosis.

Runners of all ages are invited to participate in the Morton Plant Mease Foundation's Prostate Cancer Awareness 5K RACE on Saturday, September 11 in Clearwater, Fla. Presented by Urology Specialists of West Florida, proceeds from the event will benefit community screenings, education, counseling services and other prostate cancer programs provided by the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.

The 5K run begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Cheek-Powell Wellness Center. The race course winds through the Morton Plant Hospital Campus and along nearby waterfront neighborhoods. A Kids Dash for children follows the main event at 9 a.m.

Participants can sign up by visiting www.active.com; search for Morton Plant Mease. Registration fee is $25 until August 31, $30 through September 10 and $35 the day of the race, September 11. The registration fee for the Kids Dash is $10 through September 11. Entry fees are non-refundable. Online registration closes on September 10. Registration capacity is limited to 1,000 entries.
