Bike Route Covers Three Bridges for Sixth Annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon

CLEARWATER, Fla., (March 3, 2011) - The sixth annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon is calling for all triathletes ready for a challenge to swim, bike and run along the beautiful scenic waterways and gulf coast bridges. Registration is now open for the triathlon that features a 1/3-mile open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a 13-mile bike over the Sand Key, Belleair Causeway and Memorial Causeway Bridges and 3.1 mile run finishing in Sand Key Park. The Morton Plant Mease Triathlon is one of a few local triathlons incorporating three bridges into a route for a more challenging race. The triathlon starts at 6:50 a.m., Sunday, June 26 at Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd., Clearwater, Florida.

Individual athletes and relay teams are invited to register and compete for victory to the finish line. The race is presented by the Skip Cline Society of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and sanctioned by USA Triathlon. The Morton Plant Mease Triathlon benefits the pediatric services at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.

Registration fees are $75 for individual competitors and $90 for relay teams. Registration fees will increase to $80 for individuals and $100 for relay teams on June 1, 2011. A $4,000 prize purse will be divided and distributed to the top five elite male and female finishers.

Custom plaques are also given to the top five finishers in the following categories: 14 years and younger; 15 - 19; 20 -25 and upward in five-year increments to 85 years, 85 and older; Clydesdale; Athena; Novice; Skip Cline member; and physically challenged. All race finishers receive custom medals.

Race volunteers are needed to assist with athlete registration, distribution of water along the race course and assisting at the finish line. To learn more about becoming a Morton Plant Mease Triathlon volunteer or need more information on the triathlon, please call (727) 953-9198.
