2011 Press Releases
Morton Plant Mease's Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Welcomes New Fellows

CLEARWATER, Fla., (August 1, 2011) - The University of South Florida - Morton Plant Mease Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship welcomes two new fellows. Fellows are doctors who are receiving specialized graduate medical education in a subspecialty and have already completed medical school and graduate training, or residency, in a primary specialty. The incoming fellows for the 2011-2012 academic year are Steve Sabo, MD, and Jonathan Phillips, MD.

Dr. Sabo is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, attended the Uniformed Services School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland and completed the University of Nebraska Family Medicine Residency in Omaha. Dr. Phillips attended the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, West Indies and completed the Latrobe Area Family Medicine Residency in Pennsylvania. This year's fellowship program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, began on July 1.

"As part of the program, fellows receive training from primary care sports medicine faculty physicians as well as from USF and community orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists, other specialists and allied health professionals," said Sean Bryan, MD, director of the primary care sports medicine fellowship. "With a population that is aging but also more active, we're glad to continue our program and be able to train more doctors for a career in sports medicine to care for athletes and active individuals of all ages and both genders."

Also, fellows help support community sports events and activities, including the Morton Plant Mease and St. Anthony's Triathlons, and help provide care for students in Pinellas County high schools and USF athletics under the supervision of faculty physicians.

In addition to the two fellows, the University of South Florida - Morton Plant Mease Family Medicine Residency Program welcomes ten recent medical school graduates who also began their postgraduate training on July 1.  The resident physicians in the three-year program practice under the supervision of faculty physicians at Morton Plant Hospital, St. Joseph's Children's Hospital Pediatric Unit at Mease Countryside Hospital and the Turley Family Health Center.  The Turley Family Health Center is the first residency practice site in Florida to receive Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. During residency, these physicians care for patients under the direction of faculty physicians and participate in education, quality improvement and research activities.
