Morton Plant Mease Marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month With Special Events

CLEARWATER, Fla., (Aug. 26, 2011) – As part of recognizing Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, Morton Plant Mease will present a series of special lectures, free health care screenings and a 5K family-friendly run/walk to help raise awareness and education.

Outside of skin cancer, Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in males.

To help promote prevention and detection of prostate cancer, three free screenings events will be offered next month. The screenings include educational information, digital rectal exams (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests.

  • Friday, September 9, Ptak Orthopaedic and Neuroscience Pavilion (Morton Plant Hospital campus), Suite 206, Clearwater
    • Screenings: 1:30-4 p.m.,
    • Lecture: Latest Advances in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer and Enlarged Prostate, Craig Barkley, MD, urologist
  • Friday, September 9, Mease Countryside Medical Arts Building, Suite 300, Safety Harbor
    • Screenings: 1:30-4 p.m.
    • Lecture: Latest Advances in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer and Enlarged Prostate, Martin B. Richman, MD, urologist
  • Monday, September 26, Morton Plant North Bay, Bekesh Education and Conference Center, 6600 Madison St., New Port Richey
    • Screenings: 1:30-4 p.m.
    • Lecture: What You Need to Know About Prostate Cancer, Richard Rabinowitz, MD, urologist

In addition to the lectures and screenings, the Morton Plant Mease Foundation’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Race is scheduled for Saturday, September 10. The family-friendly 5K run/walk is presented by Urology Specialists of West Florida, and benefits Morton Plant Mease community screenings and education services and assists prostate cancer patients who may not have the resources for treatment.

The 5K will kick off at 7:30 a.m. on the Morton Plant Hospital campus and the course will take runners through surrounding waterfront neighborhoods. There will also be a Kids Dash starting at 9 a.m.

Participants can register by visiting www.imathlete.com/events/mpmf5k. The registration fee is $25 until Aug. 31 and $30 after Sept. 1. The registration fee for the Kids Dash is $10. Online registration closes Sept. 7, with late registration available Sept. 9 and day of the race.

The hospitals of Morton Plant Mease offer prostate cancer patients the most advanced treatment options available to combat the disease, including robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomies and ultrasound-guided seed implantation. Additional treatment options include traditional surgery to remove the prostate gland, external beam radiation therapy and hormone therapy. A variety of support groups and services are also available to all cancer patients and their families to help them cope with the impact of cancer on their daily lives.
