Morton Plant Mease Physicians Speak About the Dangers of Sun Exposure and Melanoma

CLEARWATER, Fla., (April 10, 2012) – As part of Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in May, Morton Plant Mease physicians will present health seminars focusing on skin cancer and melanoma.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than one million cases diagnosed annually and melanoma is the most life-threatening form of skin cancer. About 12,000 people die each year from skin cancer, nearly 9,000 of those cases are from melanoma, according to the American Cancer Society. Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer for men and sixth most common for women.
With Florida residents particularly more at risk due to year round exposure to UV rays, the community is invited to attend three health seminars to learn more about melanoma, what causes melanoma, the risk factors, how to prevent it and how to treat melanoma.
