Like a tennis ball played in the sport that he enjoys, Dr. Rankin bounced from one side of the USA to the other a couple of times over the years. After graduating from medical school at UC-Davis, he completed his Family Medicine Residency at the USF-MPM Family Medicine Residency where he served as Chief Resident. Following residency he completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in Albany, Georgia.
He joined the faculty at his alma mater at the UC Davis School of Medicine Department of Family and Community Medicine where he practiced and taught full spectrum family medicine (inpatient, OB, and pediatrics). There he also completed a Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship through an affiliated program with the University of California at San Francisco.
After a brief hiatus to stay home with his youngest child recovering from open heart surgery he returned to practice as a Managing Physician in an Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care clinic working with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient population
His interests include: adolescent, sports, preventive and evidence based medicine; outcomes research; and development of outpatient clinical practice efficiencies. His educational philosophy is aimed at guiding residents to identify their goals on micro and macro levels and helping them to develop and maintain the tools to achieve these goals for long term career success and satisfaction while keeping mindful the importance of work-life balance.
Dr. Rankin's wife is also a Family Medicine physician. They enjoy good food, movies, music and laughing together! He spends as much time as he can with his three boys. He likes being close to or in the water, playing guitar, coffee, photography, cooking and, of course, hitting the tennis court. Game...Set...Match!
